Ventura first in California to officially bid for Google Fiber

Since international search engine giant Google recently announced they would bring “ultra high speed internet access” on a pilot basis to half a million households, dozens of American communities have indicated interest. Their networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. Tonight the City of Ventura became the first in California to win official City Council approval for responding to Google’s “Request for Interest.”

The Ventura City Council voted unanimously this evening to direct our staff to respond Google, Inc.’s Fiber for Communities Request for Interest. More than a dozen speakers from business, education and community organizations rallied to the cause.

Competition is expected to be stiff with cities like Seattle, Portland and others indicating interest. What does Ventura have to offer as a pilot for this experiment in ultra high speed internet access:
  • Ventura is home to the Ventura Ventures Technology Center, a high-tech incubator that launched in January and has a motto of “Where high-tech meets high surf.”
  • In 2008, Fortune Small Business Magazine named Ventura as the #68 best city in America to "live and launch" a business.
  • Most recently, the Ventura Police Department was the first in the nation to partner with Motorola Inc. on the state-of-the-art PremierOne Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • This evening’s staff report to council noted that Ventura already has high-speed, citywide fiber network (I-Net) in place, which was established nine years ago in collaboration with Ventura County, the Ventura Unified School District and the Ventura County Community College District.
  • A statistically valid communications study performed in 2008 indicated that 83 percent of homes in Ventura had a computer with internet access, and 81 percent of respondents were using high-speed cable or DSL internet.

Being first is not always an indication of goodness. In this case, I think it is a sign of the good judgment of our City leaders. My thanks!

Very ironic to my personal and business situation in Ventura. I live in the Montalvo area and work near Valentine and Knoll.

Both locations or experiencing serious problems with high speed internet connections. ATT describes the problem of the Montalvo area in needing fiber optics, but it is not available in Ventura. Several wireless companies can not provide high speed connections to set up a conference telecommunications at the Valentine and Knoll business park. There are no overhead wires to hook up, no direct tower access due to neighboring trees, and Ventura is not set up for any conversions.

I am not familiar with this high speed stuff, but several major companies explain that it is not possible in Ventura. Perhaps the city may have information regarding ventura's serious limitations of its high speed availability.
